How to Paint Brown Trim White

The best paint to use to paint stained brown trim white with no bleed though.

I finally got my studioffice back up and running so I can now function and create in organized bliss. :-) I had to paint the stained wood trim white which took some effort. Now that it is complete it is such a nice feeling after months of not having a designated place to create.

The room I claimed as my own in the lake house is bigger than I had in my previous house. It also has one huge difference…a lake view from my desk. :-)

As much as I wanted to get the room back to the way I had in my previous house, the piles of unpacked boxes around me drained my energy and I had a hard time getting my mojo back to get the space organized.

After the new flooring was put in I left the furniture and boxes in the middle of the room so I could paint the brown trim, white. I needed to do this before anything else or the room would never feel quite right to me. I know what I need to be happy in a room… white and bright always makes me feel my best.

How to paint stained wood trim white or another color

Here is how the room looked the day we moved into the house.  We removed the carpet and added new flooring. I also removed the drapes. The ceiling fan is still brown, but I have plans for it.

How to paint over dark stained woodwork and trim

The new flooring made a huge difference, but after painting the brown trim shiny white, the room began to sing to me.

How to Paint Stained Wood Trim White

supplies needed:

  • Stain blocking primer. I used Kilz Max
  • White Latex semi-gloss paint. I used Valspar in the color Bistro White 7006-4
  • Angled Trim Glide paint brush – makes painting trim easy
  • 100 grit sandpaper on a sanding block
  • Painter’s tape
How to paint over dark stained trim in a home

To successfully paint stained trim you need to first use a “stain blocking primer”. This is a must. There are many brands of stain blocking primers, but I like Kilz products. I usually use the original oil-base formula, but wanted to try the water-based Kilz Max.

I liked it a lot, especially with the simple soap and water-clean up and low odor. It will be my go-to “stain” blocking primer from now on. My other go-to primer is Glidden Gripper. I use it mostly on furniture makeovers and cabinets. It is the best primer to use when a surface is super shiny and smooth.

  1. Sand any rough spots on trim if needed.
  2. Clean the surface with detergent and water, rinse and let dry.
  3. Tape off any areas you don’t want paint to splatter.
  4. Paint 2 light coats of primer on trim, letting the first coat dry before applying the second. Let dry. If you see any discoloration (usually a brownish tint) in the dried primer you will need another coat of primer. Once that coat is dry and the white primer stays white, you are ready to paint. If areas of discoloration are still coming through the primer after 3 coats, you may need to use the oil-based formula to block the stained areas.
  5. When primer is dry, paint 2 light coats of semi-gloss white paint, letting the first coat dry before applying the second. Let dry.
  6. After the final coat has dried about 30 minutes, remove painter’s tape.

AFTER

Here is a little tour of my newly organized space where I spend a good majority of my time.

Crafts room decorating ideas

All the furnishings are from my previous house, even the 3 paneled tool wall I dubbed my “creative wall” made the move.

Home office decorating ideas

I set everything up pretty much the same way I had in my previous house with a few tweaks.

Blogger's home office. The studioffice of In My Own Style

The only new addition is actually old. It is a grey laminate desk that was left by the previous owner. It was built into a closet in an upstairs bedroom.  We removed it. With the help of our neighbor John’s table saw, the desk is now a table for my sewing machine.

Crafts room organizing ideas

I will be painting it along with the armoire. I am thinking a pretty shade of pink for the armoire, not sure yet for the grey desk/table.

Home office desk organizing ideas

You may not be able to see the texture in this photo, but I love the walls.

In the foyer, upstairs hallway and this room, there is real grasscloth paper on the walls that was painted white by the previous owner.  It keeps the room light and bright while the texture adds style and interest.

Feng Shui principles

Eventually the flooring in the kitchen will be stained a darker shade to flow with the studioffice and foyer floors. I also have a lot more stained trim to paint, but for now I have to address this row of cabinets that blocks the flow of energy and light from all directions.  It will have to wait since…

Removing a wall between two rooms

… Ed was taking on another project this past weekend where the energy flow of the house could use a boost. The wall between the kitchen and family room.

We both knew the wall and pocket door inside it needed to go. We got even more excited when the sheetrock was removed on either side of the studs. We couldn’t believe how much better the space felt, even in its raw state.  More on this wall coming soon.

  1. Were your baseboards varnished over the stain? Will the primer stick to old varnish?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Mario – My baseboards did have sealer on them, but it was getting worn. If you successfully want to paint stained/sealed wood you need to use a gripping primer first and if going over stained wood, you want to make sure the primer is also a stain killing formula as you don’t want the wood stain to leach into your paint color and yellow it. Most big brand names of paint KILZ, Behr, Sherwin Williams, etc sell a formula that will do both. To help adhesion even more, go over the surface with a piece of 100 grit sandpaper in your hand to rough up the sealed surface a bit, no electric sander needed. A quick going over is all that is needed. Then make sure to clean the wood well to get off sanding grit and any built up dust and dirt, let dry and prime then paint.

    Hi Diane!
Could you share what is your “go to” white paint color for your walls? Is it the same color as your trim? Also, do you prefer pure white as a ceiling color?
We have just retired from Illinois to North Carolina and need to paint some rooms to make this house feel more like me!
    Thank you!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Stacy – My go-to white paint color for my walls in Valspar – Bistro White. I also like Sherwin Williams – Creamy or Alabaster. They are all white, but not bright white. For my trim, I use semi-gloss Sherwin Williams Pro Classic Paint in the color Pure White. I like this paint for trim because it is a white that is not too blue or yellow. It is also a self-leveling paint so you don’t get brush marks.

I prefer pure white ceilings. I tried a color once and didn’t like the way I felt in the room.

Happy retirement. I am looking forward when I can do the same. Enjoy making the house your own.

  3. Hi Diane,

Your studioffice is so bright and must inspire you to write! I have a similar shaped table in my lake home that I set up at the window in our bedroom overlooking the lake, but it is actually a sofa table and yours looks like a real desk. It is in the cherry style of the 80s…one of our special pieces back in the day. I recently used for the first time one of those fragrance plugins and took it out so it wouldn’t be in while we were away and came back to find that the oil had leaked out onto the desk and just took the finish off. So I am looking towards a facelift myself.

Thank you for sharing your talent and inspiration! I just found your blog and can’t wait to take a tour.
    Debbie

  4. So, so beautiful. I’m feeling a little stuck about getting moving on painting my first floor bathroom (no windows and tiny). I love watching the progress you are making. Also love your newly recharged blog posts!!

  5. Debbie Klausing says:

I make jewelry and my Bead Room is in need of a rescue! I have been trying to get it sorted and organized but I am having a hard time of it! Help!

  6. I could really use some Feng Shui to make the best use of furniture placement in my new townhome. Especially need help for placement of office furniture in my husband’s office located in our open loft space, as well as our akward shaped living room!

  7. Kathy Barte says:

I would love to do over my sewing room. I don’t have most of my equipment out since the house is on the market. You know about that! So I will have another room to start from scratch! yeah!! So I need the book. I can then happily start planning.

  8. Julia@Cuckoo4Design says:

Your office is so so great. I’ve been dreaming of an organized and beautiful space like that. Amazing how you got this all done already!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Julia – If I had two children still at home, I would not be as productive. I remember how I used to live for the hours that my 2 were in school. That is when I did projects. As soon as they came home it was back to wearing my “mom hat”. I only have “one hat” to wear now so I have all day to do projects without having to juggle others schedules and activities as well as my own. It does help get things done much faster. :-)

  9. Hello Diane! My husband and I just downsized from our 3 bedroom home to a 1 bedroom apartment. We did this with the intention that we will be “unencumbered” for the 2016 year, believing that you can’t take your old self into a new year. We are thrilled and all seems to be working well…except for the pictures. We have TONS!! Tons of pics, tons of frames and now my Mac is telling me I have no space. lol It picked the wrong time to be cranky. Anyhoo, I love seeing what you do. Our new apartment is bright and cheery and I attribute that to your style. I always feel better when I see what you’ve done and how I can make mine the same, bright, clutter-free lifestyle! So thank you for sharing!

  10. My kitchen. It is small – not a lot of storage and both my husband and myself love to cook. So, we have a lot of cooking pots, pans, utensils, dishes, etc.

  11. Angela Camp says:

My bedroom/office! My back is to the door when I sit at my desk….

  12. Queen of Fifty Cents says:

I use our breakfast nook/planning desk area to upcycle and sew. It is adjacent to my small office. Would be great to be able to make the two areas more of a single unit!

  13. Patricia Wilson says:

Diane, this post couldn’t have come at a better time…”How to paint brown stained doors and trim.” Our house, like your “new to you one,” has solid core doors (thankfully) which look exactly like yours…and the trim. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And just when I believed I couldn’t enjoy your blog more, you and Ed took up an adventure that I’m following along with you. Is living vicariously necessarily a bad thing? With regard to your studio, nothing could be better than a serene view of a lake (as you also have in your MB). My crafts/sewing room is a basement area and I can’t see our beautiful Columbia Lake though it’s only a five-minute walk. Nevertheless, because our home is built into a side of a hill, my crafts room does have a large picture window overlooking some of our flower beds and the beautiful woods behind, and the side window affords a view of Rhododendron and Azalea in the spring so I won’t complain…perhaps whining just a bit? It seems from your pics that your studio is large enough to encompass four distinct spaces; desk and computer at the center, sewing center, wrapping/craft center, and storage in your lovely armoire with space enough to move easily about the spaces. I love the layout. I’m wondering what are the dimensions of your studio space? Right now, my crafts room looks like an episode of “Hoarders.” I more than realize I desperately need to organize and reconfigure my space, so I’d be very happy if you were to do a few more posts about your specific ideas for organization in your studio. The only upside to my current situation is that every time I’m down there, it’s just like Christmas because I’ve forgotten what craft materials I actually have.

Also, I noticed a sisal rug beneath your desk area. I love how they look, but I have no idea how a sisal rug is cleaned, and also how they might hold up to two Golden Retrievers who are truly perfect citizens in that they never chew on anything at all that isn’t a toy, and are totally, totally housebroken and have been since just little pups. My concern is their nails and they do shed? Any thoughts or recommendations, Diane?

Being a writer, it seems I’m incapable of short, succinct writing of any kind, and certainly not e-mails. I’ve always been a pen and ink letter writer and don’t really want to cure myself of that addiction as long as I have writer friends who still enjoy that antiquated communication.

Wishing you and Ed happiness in your new home, and continued success with your blog, Diane. As I may have said in a previous comment or e-mail to you, I love your blog, and especially love your smiling personae at its very beginning.

    Patricia – Columbia, CT

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Patricia – It makes me smile that what I do is inspiring you. XO Before my previous house, my crafts room was in the basement…and one with no windows. I feel blessed that I have a light and bright space to create in. Looking out to nature sounds very nice. You can see the 4 seasons, but as you said, Spring offers the best scenery.

Here are the answers to your questions. The size of my studioffice is 14′ x 14′. I love sisal and seagrass rugs. I am not too fond of jute. They smell and are too flimsy. To care for the sisal, I just vacuum. If a spot gets on it, I use a mix of detergent and water on a sponge to lift it out. We had 2 dogs and a cat. They laid on the rugs all the time. No problems with getting their hair up or damage from their nails on either the sisal or the seagrass in my family room. Maybe get a small area rug and let them walk over it and see what happens. The one thing with a seagrass rug that takes getting used to is that you can’t slide furniture over it. Every thing needs to be picked up to be moved. Hope this helps. :-)

  14. My office/den is crying out for some feng-shui. Because we had to re-orient the downstairs of our home to make a small apartment for my ather-in-law, my office became a corner in the den. Thankfully it is a large room with a huge window, but my desk has to face the wall, therefore my back is to the window. There is a pocket door entry directly to my left leading into the kitchen and a door about 5 feet to the right of me which leads out to an open space, a confluence, if you will, of two hallways. I have done some very selectve personal decorating to the wall in front front of me and the one to my side, I have nice things to look at, but Isometimes I feel like I don’t have enough air to breathe. We have looked at this space so many ways and I don’t know if there is anyway to arrange it. I think it’s going to have to be color or different decot that is going to help me out, so far , no ideas.
You and Ed blow me away! I can’t believe how much you have accomplished in the little time you have been there! Do you both stay up really late and get up really early? I don’t know how you find enough hours in the day to accomplish all that you have. You studioffice is beautiful and your lake view has got to be so much food for creativity! I can’t wait to see how each new thing unfolds with your delightful creative touch. Please take good care of yourselves and enjoy the process. Be blessed Diane!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

      Hi Judy –

It sounds like you have been putting a lot of thought into how your space is set up. That is a good thing. Keep editing until it feels right. It took me about 8 years to get my studioffice right and I am still tweaking.

When I am asked how I get so much done, I have to remind them that doing DIY and decorating projects is my job. My full-time job. I don’t have to leave my house, except for runs to the home improvement store during working hours. I don’t work on projects at night, but do edit photos and write my posts usually after dinner. If I had a job outside the home or children still at home I would not be as productive. My days are 100% focused on getting projects done so I can post and share them on my blog. It is how I make my living, so I have to stay productive. I love creating and DIY so it never really feels like work. The nice thing is that when I do need to take a break, I am the “boss of me” and don’t have to get the approval from someone else to do so. :-)

  15. My sewing room could use an energy boost to get my creativity flowing.

  16. Joanne B. says:

I would love to know more about the art of Feng Shui! I think I kind of have an aptitude for what feels right anyway, because once I tried my bed on a certain wall in my master but I had the hardest time sleeping in it that way. I switched to to the opposite wall and voila! I spelt like a baby! I later read that in Feng Shui your feet should be facing out the door! It just didn’t feel right the other way and I knew something was off! So I’d love to learn more! Thanks for this great giveaway!

    Hi,
I am in the process of moving my sewing room from a small bedroom on the second floor to the living room on the first floor. Since Christmas I have sold the majority of my furniture and have picked out new flooring to be installed as soon as the room is completely empty. As my old room was 10×10 and my new room is 13×15, i am going to need help figuring out the placement of all of my sewing and quilting goodies. Thank you for the chance to win this wonderful book! i am sure it would help me make my sewing room into a calm, creative space.

  21. I have a spare room that needs to be decluttered, stripped and set up as a craft/beauty room.

  22. My bedroom. It’s needs a special touch. Still has original paint …need to make it pretty and less cluttered.

Good morning. Wow! You have gotten a lot done and it looks great. I have a 1950’s ranch with a small den that has knotty pine paneling. This room needs to be painted and defiant,y a lot of fend shui! Happy Wednesday.

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s challernging to get that “perfect balance” between user frijendliness
and visual appearance. I must say tha you’ve done a awesome job with this.
Also, the blog loads super fast foor me on Firefox. Exceptional Blog!

  27. Amazing Diane!! What a beautiful space it has become already. You must so enjoy looking out at your view while you work. I often end up doing computer work in our dining room just so I can enjoy the view rather then in my craft room – that’s a more focused space where I don’t really take time to look around and ponder:) lol. I’m so excited about the other projects see starting over there!! Fun! And the space in my house that would benefit most from a little Feng shui clutter clearing is definitely the basement. I’ve got a task ahead of me there!

  28. Having recently moved from a two story 5 bedroom home to a 2 embed room apartment with a tiny den, I could use all the feng shui I can learn to try to figure out how to give this space some good chi. Thanks for the contest and insight!

  29. Definitely my kitchen! :)

  30. I’m sure there will be a multitude of posts and projects coming from your new office! We have stained honey pine trim and I’m done with the yellownish of it. I just can’t decide if we should paint or replace with a wider trim. I generally think our house is set up with a good flow, but I sure wouldn’t mind checking the book out! I was thinking about you when I saw that we have a World Market open now that you’ve moved and would’ve loved to hear your spin on it! (I live next door to Anne and Jp-Mandy has been over swimming?) I’m looking forward to seeing all of your adventures because you’re basically living my dream haha!

  31. Hi Diane, I just found your blog today, and I am thrilled that I did! I was looking for info on painting furniture, because I am happy to say that after years (literally) of all sorts of problems, I am finally going to have a craft room where I can work on my beloved papercrafting projects. I am so excited, because I have been having to work on the dining room table, and I have a dresser and a chest of drawers containing my most used supplies kind of “stuffed” behind my dining room table! Our house isn’t large in the first place, and the rest of my supplies are all over the place. So since I am definitely on a budget, I am going to paint a couple of the chests I have, plus I’ve been shopping thrift stores for more storage. Of course, I’ve been pouring over pinterest for ideas – and I found you! I’ve learned so much from your blog already! I was really interested in your comments about Feng Shui. I would love to learn more about the principles so I can set up my new room in the best way possible. Even though I’m so excited about it, I do get overwhelmed at all there is to do! Your new room is definitely an inspiration, as is your whole blog! I know I’ll be here on a regular basis getting more ideas and instruction on how to try them myself! Thanks so much!

  32. Kathleen Seibold says:

  44. The lower level of my split ranch has a fireplace, windows for lots of natural light, a full bath and a door to a screen room. For all it’s attributes, it doesn’t “feel” right. When guests stay there I feel like I am banishing them to a dungeon.

  53. My great room – the only great thing about it is that it has a great view outside!

  54. My husband’s office could use some Feng Shui. His back is to the door! BTW, my mother has that same sewing machine! The older machines just don’t wear out! I just love your new location in SC. I’m sure you can’t wait for summer!

  56. How many peony stems did you use in your vase? They are very pretty.

  57. Your office looks great! I am about to begin the task of painting all of our stained trim. I can’t wait to get to it. I know it will lighten things up so much. As for the Feng Shui, my whole house would benefit!

  58. My kitchen! I have too many cabinets to hide things away! I know they need a good purge. How do you get rid of your grandma’s circa 1940 stand mixer and her canisters?!?

  59. Linda O'Neill says:

We pretty much have an open space arrangement and it looks OK Just OK. I’d like it to look more cozy, cohesive and have more of a WOW factor.

  60. Definitely my designated office area, formerly a bedroom…..I know I have too much stuff, but can’t seem to figure the right lay out to maximize the possibilities

  61. Wow!!! Your office looks amazing! You are so lucky to have the large windows and the view of the lake. You certainly have earned your new office with all of the hard work you and your husband have put into it. Congratulations!!

The book sounds really interesting. I’d love to be considered when making your decision! Have a wonderful day!

  64. Bonnie Lau says:

I have a room that I want to make into my sewing/craft room for me. At the present it consists of a train village, crafts, and stuff! I keep looking at it just wondering how to de-clutter to make this a nice workable room. That is as far as I get. I just keep putting more and more into that room. HELP!!! I love what you have done to your room.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Bonnie – I would start small… get a few boxes and start moving stuff out of the room. Maybe stack them in the garage or one by one donate what you no longer need. Once you find a new place or donate the stuff that is not Sewing or crafts related, you will better be able to start setting the room up as you envision. It is hard getting started, but once you get going and see that your efforts are paying off you will get more energy to transform the room into a space you will love. :-)

  65. Melanie C. says:

I’m just so thrilled to see how it would look if I finally convinced my husband to paint the trim in our house. It’s all stained but not in a pretty way and he seems to have an aversion to changing it. You are making great progress. Keep it up!

  66. My living room. Even though it’s an open floor plan the space crosses our main hallway into the dining area and I can’t seem to find an arrangement that feels right.

  67. My dining room – which now has a treadmill in it. Help!

Our studio, as we like to call it, could use Feng Shui. My husband ties flies (fly fishing) and I enjoy crafts. It’s current state leaves something to be desired. Would love to tweak it with some inspirations from your office.

  81. Brenda Roberts says:

My bedroom needs Feng Shui, just moved in a few months ago and can’t get a good handle on making it relaxing and functional.

  82. My living room – off the kitchen. I really don’t know what to do!

  83. My whole house needs some Feng shui! I just moved into a new home and feeling overwhelmed on everything! New home, new state, new life and disaster of a home! Love your new place on the lake!

  84. Christy Peeples DuBois says:

My bedroom is in great need of Feng Shui. I have always kept everything beat and organized but due to a series of events beyond my control my room got away from me and now I stay stressed just being in there. I need all the help I can get. You made great changes that I love in your office. It is amazing how changing the trim color made such a drastic difference. Love it.

  85. Sue Dyroff says:

Your room is transforming wonderfully with your touch! Really like how the floors turned out. Very “stylish low country” look!
I could use the book to help me better organize my great room and guide me in creating a clutter free life!

  86. Mary Heicher says:

Definitely the office, it’s a giant clutter fest.

  87. My office really needs help! Along with my master bedroom.
As I sit here typing, my back is to the door – help!
Thanks for the chance to win!

  88. Love following your journey putting your special touches in each room. Making a house a home.
    Great tips!
    Thanks for a great giveaway!

  89. My office really needs some help, along with the master bedroom.

Thanks for the chance to win!

  90. OH boy……definitely my craft/spare bedroom!!!!!!!!! When I saw your photos here…..well….I will definitely work on organizing my craft room. My shelves (bookcases) are loaded with craft supplies for all kinds of crafts….I don’t know what I have any longer!!!!! I hate to get rid of anything because I want to have things on hand for when I am in the mood to do any particular craft. I have too many interests and really need to make up my mind which ones are important to me, and get rid of the ones “not so much”. Very difficult :-). Anyway, I sure could use someone’s advice at how to begin. Love watching your lake house renovation progress!!! So inspiring!!!!

  91. I’m so enjoying following along on this journey with you! Your office is just gorgeous! We settle on our new house in 3 days (eek!), and the entire first floor needs gutted! So many small choppy rooms and 6 different flooring styles just on that level! I was shopping all morning for a new flooring option and I just love your floors!

  92. Cindy Spratt says:

It’s been fun watching your talents as you move into your new lake home! I would dearly love a lake home myself someday. My home is asian/modern and I could use some help with my Fend Shui in my family room. I also have my desk in that room and it never seems quite right!

  93. Cindy Spratt says:

Love watching your new home flourish under your great taste in decorating! My house has an area that is always not quite right to me; it’s the family room where I also have my desk. I have a modern/asian style of home, so I would love to improve on my feng shui!

  94. My living room/great room also includes our dining area and my piano. There isn’t a defined entryway and with a corner fireplace, I always feel like I’m doing something wrong with my current layout. This room could sure use some help!

  95. Helen E. Moss says:

    Hi, Diane!

Congratulations on getting a great start on the house. Especially such a light and bright room with a lake view. When I go into the dance studio, I have to open all the curtains. My house is really dark because of the way the windows are situated. I’m trying to de-clutter now, but probably understanding feng shui principles would help. The main issue is my work/storage room where I house my library and collection of kimono and costumes. I can’t even bear to go in there much — which, even though I’ve made a lot of headway with the clutter.

    Helen

  96. Since we are moving this Spring, my whole house could use some Feng Shui help in order to get it ready to sell. Mostly I think my home office could use the most help.

  97. Oh my goodness, I need this book! I’ve been working on de cluttering my whole house and each room could use a little help from this book. Thanks for the giveaway! (Love to see the changes you are making to your lovely new home!)

  98. My office would benefit considerably from a little Feng Shui – especially after viewing your life-giving space! Thanks for sharing it with us – I pinned away!

  99. My small den needs some Fung Shui. I am at a loss as what to do. I could work in your new office all day. Just lovely.

  100. Hi, Diane

I am drooling over your office space. Wow, I would love a big open space and bright white walls. Just lovely flow in your space and I can feel the creative flow.

  101. Donna Hart says:

My living room and my work space. I walk in and my insides begin to tighten up. I feel the stress building and don’t know where to start. Overwhelming, to say the least! Your spaces are so beautiful and calm. Feng Shui sounds like it was written for me! Thank you for sharing!,

  102. Barbara Fransen says:

My spare bedroom needs Feng Shui. We have many bulky pieces of furniture in there and it seems smaller and darker than it should.

  103. Probably start with my living room. But I can always use new ways to get/remain clutter free!

  104. Heather C says:

I would never leave your new room, it is gorgeous. I recently redid my craft/sewing closet and ridding myself of all the clutter that had accumulated in there has certainly freed up the energy and creativity. My pantry would be the area that needs attention now – it’s terribly organized – no energy.

  105. Sheryll $ Critters. says:

Thank you and I was positive you would paint the trim! I do love your style, because it is my style also. I just have a poverty (because of being ripped off), coastal, casual style.

  106. I could use some help clearing the clutter throughout our house and updating the bedrooms. Thanks!

  107. My living room needs a bit of Feng Shui! It is dark and the couch needs to be replaced. I would like it to be more livable and not the traditional living room that it just used for formal occasions (which is maybe three times a year). Thanks for the opportunity to win the book! I would love to read it.

  108. Our basement could use a feng shui makeover.

  109. I need Feng Shui throughout the house, but would start with my home office!

  110. Christy H says:

It’s tough to pick one area but I would pick our computer room/home office area.

  111. My whole house! All of my children (5) are home again as well as 2 grands! I need help!

  112. I love how your space has come together! Beautiful! I have been reworking my den/craft area. It does need some Feng Shui to help me feel more creative! I would love to win the book! Thank you for offering it to us!

  113. Beautiful creative space! Looking forward to seeing all your transformations. My basement needs organized as does my daughter’s former bedroom, which is now a guest room. It just doesn’t “feel” right.
Thank you for the opportunity to win this book.

  114. My kitchen and bedroom need Feng Shui desperately. Love your new home. :)

  115. Candy Thayer says:

I am working on my craft room to make it more organized so that I can be more productive. Perhaps the book would help…..

  116. Charisse Andrews at WHG says:

I love the space you have created for yourself. And who wouldn’t be creative with a view of a lake from an office, although I might get in a trance watching the sun dance on the water, and not get much work done! One can always incorporate or refine the principles of Feng Shui in ones rooms, and it sounds like this book would be a nice addition to design approaches. I hope your shingles has abated and you are back to feeling like yourself again.

  117. Feng Shui my closet! Truly needed.

  118. WOW!! What a huge difference & what a great space to create in.
Your blog & suggestions give me hope for my basement. It needs so much purging & organization. It’s a huge task but you have given me hope that I too can do this.
I have a couple friends who have read this book & then proceeded to go to work on their clothes closets. Sounds great! Feng Shui is the way to go.

  119. Audrey Smith says:

I anxiously awaited to see your studio in the new home. It did not disappoint.
My craft room is in desperate need of help. My husband just recently moved his office space to a bedroom vacated by my daughter so I have the room to spread out.
    Looking for ideas

  120. Carol Griffin says:

I absolutely love the transformation of your new office/studio and what all you have done to make it YOU! Cannot wait to follow you on this new journey as you transform the rest of your lake house! Would love to win a copy of this book because I am sure that I could benefit in making some changes and being more organized.

  121. I have several rooms that need some help especially the living room. Hoping Feng Shui is the answer.

  122. I need to clear the clutter with feng shui in every room in my home. The room are very small and dark. I need to see the light!!

  123. My bonus room over the garage is a conglomeration of random pieces of furniture. I use that room for my sewing room and office but it depresses me to walk in there. The space has lots of potential but I don’t know how to begin.

  124. Deb Wostmann says:

Your office looks wonderful. My living room could probably use some Feng Shui help so a book would certainly be useful to get me going in the right direction.

  125. Oh Boy! Do I need this book, we are renovating two houses one to move into and one to put on the market. I’m living in chaos and there seems to be no end in sight. Diane, you are an inspiration and a treasure of knowledge. Thanks for everything you teach us.

  126. Deb Brennan says:

There is definitely a direct correlation between a cluttered and disorganized home and our minds not being free to be creative and free from stress. I am finally ( after two children and a dog who I love dearly) in the process of tackling our entire house and the vestiges of time! I know this book would give me inspiration and direction…but I’m wondering: I don’t believe us Canadians are eligible? :(

  127. Would love to actually read about the principals of feng shui. Mostly I’ve been applying the principals by feel. Thanks!

  128. Marja Tanos says:

My bedroom and my living room

  129. Linda White says:

Well, every room in my house needs help. I just can’t get motivated to get started. This would be a great win. Thanks for the opportunity.

  130. Wow, what an awesome creative space and oh what a difference some white paint can make!!! I just started sewing myself so love to see your vintage machine and your beautiful fabrics :-) I definitely need Feng Shui help in Every. Single. Room. in my house….. I guess I need it most in my bedrooms though!

  131. Laura Bervig says:

We just remodeled our kitchen and our home office is directly off of the kitchen. I could use some serious Feng Shui in this space to help with the new lighter and brighter kitchen we’ve created! Love your new home and so looking forward to seeing all the wonderful projects you have planned!!

  132. Janine Rolph says:

HI, boy of boy my family room would be so happy to have a new look/change :-) It just told me this past weekend that it was tired of the living arrangement after 25 yrs!!! lol. Needs serious Feng Shui help!!! Please!

Our entire home could benefit from some Fung Shui. I’m enjoying the updates to your lake house, keep them coming!

  134. My husband’s office… I can’t even begin to tell you how much it needs a little Feng Shui.

  135. Dorene @ Seasonal Chapters says:

I read a book on Feng Shui years ago and this post peaked my interest in the topic again. Ironically, you are the second blogger that I follow who posted a recent article on this subject. I recently told my husband I was thinking about converting a room in our home into a new studio/office for me to work in, and I would love to incorporate some Feng Shui principles when we move forward with the project. I often feeled stressed and/or drained when working in the room we currently use as an office, and interestingly enough, the desk is situated where my back faces the door.
I love how your new home is evolving and the changes you have made so far. The views from your office combined with the Feng Shui principles you used, must make it an amazing place to work. Looking forward to seeing the other projects you have planned for the house come to fruition.

  136. Roxanne Coe says:

My home was built in 1988. Every room is blocked by a wall. Kitchen and dining room are open but living room is blocked by a wall. Would like to learn how I can make my home more Feng Shui without tearing down alot of walls. Hope this book can help me with this. I would be a Happy girl if I was to win. Thank you, Roxanne

  137. My office/craft loft that I share with my homeschooling daughter could use a lot of feng shui. My energy is so blocked whenever we try to work! Love your new office – must be so happy with the view!

  138. Could I ever use your Feng Shui book! We have been wanting to put our house on the market to sell but just couldn’t get motivated to make it ready. Not sure if your move blogs were my motivation or not, but this week I have workers here doing repairs that we knew would need to be done. Spare moments I’ve started decluttering and then will get to the staging. I’m pretty much a neatnick but can also manage to save way too many things!

  139. Jennifer Hoglen says:

My husband and I recently moved back to the States after 25 years overseas. We still have boxes to unpack, but I have little energy to do anything after I get home from work. Your posts have really spoken to me since I think the clutter around me zaps my energy. I would love to have a copy of the book about Feng Shui to help me get started on clearing away the clutter.

  140. DENISE CERRO says:

Love watching your transformations. I could really use a little Feng Shui in my studio/office which is out in the open and really needs to flow with the rest of the home…right now it does not! :(
PS…like you Diane, I too was in visual Presentation for many year…so have a lot of tricks up my sleeve…though stumped on this one!

  141. Suzanne W. says:

I have a dual office/craft room… seeing as my organized self competes for space with my creative self, the room ends up being overall chaos with no flow!

  142. I have been struggling with my craft room and I would love to sit down and read this book to find ways to help. I feel frustrated by the space and want to organize my tools and furniture so I can feel more productive. Thanks for the opportunity – Kate

  143. Lisa Cooper says:

My den could use some Feng Shui! I would love to win a Kohl’s gift card, its my favorite store!

  144. Helen Henkler says:

I used to have a book on organizing, but I can’t find it anymore! lol Just about every area of my home could benefit from this. Thanks, Diane.
