Why I Love Tarkett Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

If you are considering laying luxury vinyl plank flooring in your home, my husband and I have become quite good at it after installing it in my studioffice, powder room  and guest bathroom. We have a few tips to share that will make the process easier for you.

Happy is what I am feeling with how easy this luxury vinyl plank flooring called ProGen by Tarkett was to install. I love the clean fresh look of the room now.

I am sharing lots of photos below along with a few floor installation tips and tricks that we found helped make the installation a breeze.

BEFORE: Game Room With Wall to Wall Carpet

Decorating ideas for game or spare rooms

Here is how the room looked BEFORE with the old wall-to-wall carpet, exposed electrical wiring on the ceiling, yellowed walls and the brown door, window trim and ceiling fans.

AFTER: Game Room with Tarkett ProGen Vinyl Planks

Tarkett Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

We use this room as a place to workout and when we have friends and family over, to play pool and/or ping-pong.

The flooring we installed is luxury vinyl plank from Tarkett. It is call ProGen and comes in 22 different colors. We used the color Milled Oak Copper 25L2. Doesn’t it look exactly like wood?  But it’s not, it is vinyl that is waterproof and pretty much damage proof.

Tarkett ProGen flooring makes the room look open and airy, so much so that I decided I preferred the spacious feel of the room when we had the furniture all pushed to one side during the floor installation. In the end, I decided to remove the large bookcase along the long wall that had become a magnet for clutter.

I made the wheeled storage basket to hold workout items.

how to remove wall to wall carpeting

Room Makeover TIP: If you are going to paint the walls in the room, paint them first and use the carpeting as your drop cloth. Since you will be removing it, this step will save you time from having to protect the new flooring from paint.

The hardest part of installing new flooring is ripping up the old carpet and removing all the carpet tacking strips and tacks. Then of course, you have to get rid of all of it.

Once that is done, laying the ProGen luxury vinyl plank flooring is easy and goes very fast thanks to the rigid core and uni-click locking system of the planks.

One interesting thing we discovered when we removed the carpet were the names written in the subfloor of the four men that built our house back in 1974. We live off a main road called, Amick’s Ferry Road.

With a little research we found out that the Amick family were one of the first families to settle in the area way back when. A fun discovery.

How to install vinyl plank flooring

There are many selling features of Tarkett ProGen flooring, but the one that I like is that it doesn’t warp or bend when exposed to temperature fluctuations or sunlight. This makes it perfect for the room that gets a lot of sun in the afternoon or any room, especially high traffic areas like hallways and mudrooms.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring can be installed with a standard tool set and easily cut with a basic utility knife! No power saw needed. You simply score the plank with the knife, bend and run the knife through the bend to snap it off.

It requires no acclimation time (most other flooring require 24 hours of acclimation time), and can be installed the same day you receive it.

ProGen has three different sizes of planks. The Milled Oak Copper color that we used measures 7″ x 60″ and one box of 10 planks covers 28.6 square feet.
Tarkett Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring installation tips

I didn’t paint the inside of the closets, but we did run the ProGen flooring into all three. Ed used a rotary cutting tool to cut a gap where the molding met the floor. That allowed for some slight imperfections in cutting the flooring around the door trim.

I painted the brown louvered doors, white.  I love the contrast of the white against the dark floor.

For now, I placed the existing seating back around the pool table, but I am looking for a few metal and wood stools to use instead.

We still have the pool table on sliding discs until we have a chance to level the table. Then I will remove them.

How to Install New Flooring When You Can’t Move The Furniture Out of the Room

Even though they are sold for sliding furniture over carpeting, any of these Furniture Sliding Discs work equally as well over sub-flooring and vinyl plank flooring.

The sliding discs made it possible to leave the pool table and the other large pieces of furniture in the room as we installed the ProGen. We used them to slide all the big items to one side of the room…

…so that we could install the flooring on the empty side. Once that side was done, we slid the furniture over the new flooring and completed the installation on the opposite side of the room.

This pool table was left in the house by the previous owners. It is not a high end table, so I am not afraid to alter the color. I am thinking I may paint the light wood on the table a darker color so it coordinates better with the flooring.

I may create a photo gallery wall on this wall where we previously had bookcases. I have quite a few photos from our previous house that are still packed away in a box. I think I can finally use them here to add color and interest.

More Tips on How to Install Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

Installing ProGen Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring is not hard, even for a first time homeowner or DIY’er. Having a few basic tools ready and watching the short installation video made the install easy for us.

The video includes installation of a layer of ProSheet down before the flooring. We did not use this as the flooring can be installed directly over most surfaces.

supplies needed:

  • t-square or carpenter’s square
  • tape measure
  • utility knife with lots of replacement blades
  • chalk marker
  • rotary style drill with diamond or wood cutting discs or an undercutting blade
  • pliers – to remove remaining carpet tacks
  • hammer – to remove any popped nails and carpet tacking strips

TIP #1:  Buy knee pads or a thick kneeling pad to kneel on. It is a life saver for your knees.

TIP #2:  Each plank slides into the last one installed. Simply slide the new plank in along the previous plank, gently push in, then bring down and you will hear a click that locks it into place.

TIP #3: We didn’t have an undercutting blade, but we found a filing drill bit worked well to cut the trim around the doors in the room so the planks would slide right under.

How to install luxury vinyl plank flooring

TIP #4: Take your time to figure out detailed cuts around doors. We marked the planks using a chalk marker and straight edge where we would need to cut.

We used a rotary drill with a diamond cutting disc and a utility knife to cut the plank to fit. You can also use an undercutting tool to create a gap between the door trim and floor which hides any imperfection in the cuts.

UPDATE: When installing luxury vinyl plank in a room, buying this inexpensive gauge makes detailed cuts fast, easy and professional. We didn’t have one, but I highly suggest getting one, they are not expensive and will save you time and frustration.

We kept marking and cutting a little bit at a time until we could slide the plank around the door jam for a perfect fit.

TIP #5: Leave 1/4″ expansion space around the perimeter of the floor and columns and other vertical objects in the room for the floor to expand.

It will be hidden once you add shoe molding to the baseboard. Do not nail it to the floor.

TIP #6: For flooring transitions where the ProGen meets another type of flooring, use a wood threshold that you can buy at a home improvement store and stain it to match the ProGen. We used a wood one that is made specifically for the transition from carpet to vinyl. It is screwed into the subfloor.

TIP #7:  Get ready for the desire to want to extend your new ProGen flooring out into hallways and other rooms in your home.  :-)

I couldn’t be happier with how the room came out :-)

I love how this looks!! In the store, this looks very coppery (which is in the name), but not in your pictures! I am doing a lot of grey and black and white, but am looking for a wood to bring some great warmth to the house. It will be going in my entire house, so I’m so afraid of choosing the wrong color! Do you notice the heavy copper undertones?

    1. How is the ProGen floor looking now? I’m really interested in this flooring but wondering if it scratches easily and shows dents.
      Thanks!

      1. Diane Henkler says:

Of all the new flooring I have put in my house, I like the ProGen the best, in fact I love it!!! It is so durable and we move heavy fitness machines/equipment over it all the time. It hasn’t a scratch or dent where furniture is. I haven’t moved the pool table, so I can’t be sure if very heavy furniture will leave a dent or not, but all the other furniture in the room has not left any marks.

  2. We’re about to build a home just outside Myrtle Beach and are trying to decide on flooring (engineered hardwood, porcelain or LVP). We’re from up north and all we’ve ever used is 100% hardwood. We went to a store up here and saw this ProGen product. Have you seen any discoloration due to the sun or any other issues ? It has a 20 mm wear layer, how is that ? Johnson flooring Public House has a 30mm wear layer so we’re looking at that as well. Thank you. Nice website.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Bobby – I have put 4 different types of flooring in my current house. The ProGen LVP, NuCore LVP, Select Surfaces wood laminate and hardwood that was recently refinished by Bona. I love all of them. So far none has gotten sun-bleached. Both the ProGen an NuCore are indestructible and so easy to clean. So much easier than hardwood.

The room with the ProGen gets sun but only near a sliding door and has not changed in color at all. I am not sure how thick it is, but it looks amazing and is quiet when you walk over it, unlike wood laminate flooring.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. Did this flooring off-gas or leave any chemical smells? I can’t tell if it is considered low VOC?

    Thank you!
    Sandi

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Sandi – The floor does not have a smell at all. I am not sure they sell it as a VOC flooring product though. I love it.

  4. Hi! We are looking at these same floors for our first floor remodel – which consists of two bedrooms, kitchen, living room, hallway, dining area. Have you found that dust shows on this floor? You know how some floors show everything, would you say that’s a problem with this floor? We have three kids and a dog so a floor that hides our day to day mess would help. Also, what do you use to clean it?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

      Hi Jill –

I love the Tarkett flooring. It is amazing. I have another brand of LVP in other rooms of my house that I also like, but not as much as the Tarkett.

If I as building a new home, I would use this everywhere. It looks like real plank flooring and it tough and durable and so easy to clean with a Swiffer or Bona mop.

It doesn’t show dust or dirt more than any hardwood floor does. If you are worried about seeing pet hair and dust, you may want to consider going with a lighter color. The darker any wood, LVP or laminate, the more dust and dirt build up you see. For pet hair, if your pets have dark hair, go with a darker floor. If they have light hair go with a lighter color. :-) For real, it can make a difference.

  5. Hi! Just thought I’d chime in with those that are considering this product! We installed this in our basement and it looks beautiful. However, we are experiencing a strong VOC scent from it and it has taken away from the enjoyment of the product. We are reaching out to Tarkett to see how they will remedy the problem. It is supposed to be low VOC..florscore,etc.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Tim – Thanks for commenting. It is always good to see how the same product is working for others. My flooring is on a second floor where there is plenty of airflow. It does not smell at all. I love it.

I wonder if the humidity of the basement has brought out a smell? So many factors to consider, what manufacturing plant was it made at? Etc. I hope Tarkett can remedy the situation for you.

    2. Natalie Joshi says:

Hi. I just had the Progen flooring installed also, and it does have a smell. I’ve turned on the fan and opened up the patio door. Has Tarkett given you any ideas of how long this smell will last. I have a small puppy.

      1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Natalie – When we installed the floors, the planks smelled when we cut them. We opened the door to the outside in the room and that helped. After installation the smell went away rather quickly. You may want to clean the new floor with a floor cleaner. I used Swiffer cleaner for floors to do this. It did help to lessen the smell that first week or so. After this time – the smell went away.

        1. Natalie Joshi says:

Diane, Thank you for replying so quickly. I opened all the windows and turned on all the fans. I don’t smell the floors anymore. In terms of cleaning, I was told to use only a damp mop with water and then dry it with another dry cloth mop. Does the swifter leave any footprints, streaks or smudges? I’m afraid to use anything, but would line to use something simple like a stiffer. Any more thoughts on this? Your floor looks awesome. Mine is Tarkett Progen Spiced Hickory.

          1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Natalie – I have used both a Swiffer spray mop and a Bona spray Mop. Both have a Velcro attached washable pad. I like the Bona much better. When you use this kind of mop the floor doesn’t get that wet like a regular mop would. It is all I have used on all my LVP floors and they all are fine. This is the mop and cleaner I use:

  6. Hi! i love your vinyl plank flooring! I am considering for a project. How is it holing up? Does it have an odor? Do you have pets on it?
    Thanks.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Amy – The floor has held up very well – perfectly in fact. It has no odor. I don’t have pets, but I do have grand pets that come to visit frequently and there comings and goings do not damage the floor. I love this flooring and eventually would like to use it in a few other rooms in my house also.

  7. I am considering the progen and was wondering if you still like it. Also, is it as easy to install as the manufacturer suggests.?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Jason – I am very happy with the ProGen. Every time I go into the room, I smile since it looks so good. For installing, the instructions say to cut the planks with a knife. My husband who did most of the install found that impossible and used his circular saw to cut the planks. It made a mess as he cut, but was easy to sweep up and made installing the planks easy. The less details you have to cut around – like closets etc, the easier the install will be.

  8. How do you think this would look in a basement with limited lighting? Is it quite dark or does the copper and lighter pieces lighten it up? Looks amazing in your space!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Renae – I think it would look fine in a low-light basement. The color would warm up a basement and you could always add more lights in the way of lamps to the space to lighten it up if you like the color of the flooring.

Take a look at the Tarkett site. There is a link to it in my post. Check to see if there is another color that may look better in your space. I chose the Copper since it was a medium color – not too dark, light or orange. :-) Classic that will stand the test of time.

  9. Very nice! How is it holding up so far?

  10. Andrew Agar says:

Not an easy process if you don’t have previous experience

  11. Diane! This turned out so well, talk about great inspo!!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Autumn – Thanks. I love the flooring and the clean fresh appeal it adds to the room.

  12. Mariana Escalante says:

I love hardwood floors and especially those that are natural, provides a sophisticated touch

  13. Diane Henkler, Wow this is the best looking flooring I’ve ever seen!

  14. Your room looks amazing, i really love dark brown floor – it’s looks very stylish.

  15. I love LVP, but one of the rooms I want to Re-do borders a step down living room, on a concrete slab (both levels). Do you know if they make a safe to use Stair molding or a long 8′ tread that can tie into this?

  16. Can this be layed over Vinyl floors. Or carpet

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Juan – It can be laid over vinyl floors as long as the vinyl is secure on the floor and is in sound condition. It cannot be used over carpet.

  17. Nawm D. Gerr says:

Looks really nice! Thanks for sharing.

  18. Becky in 'Bama says:

You have sold me on this flooring. Our current laminate flooring (wood look) needs to be replaced due to formaldehyde off gas (low level but still needs to be ripped out). I marvel at the look of this product. My parents had the laminate ‘wood’ floor installed in their home back in the early 2000’s and it was just awful. It was practically like plastic and screamed FAKE WOOD but these new products are the best.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Becky – We really love the luxury vinyl planks. Flooring, has really come a long way. The ProGen really looks like wood.

  19. Sheryll $ Critters. says:

I love this look! I couldn’t get to the site, but I’m betting it’s too expensive for me. I have a concrete slab home and the wood look porcelain is gorgeous, but very heavy. Wish I had this flooring! Also, shipping is VERY costly! I guess I will do without.

As usual great blog! I’ve gotten to the point that your blog is the only one I look forward to reading.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Sheryll – I looked at the porcelain wood. It is nice, but like you said heavy and if something heavy falls on it, it can crack just like tile. I love the ProGen luxury vinyl planks, even more than the previous vinyl plank we used in other rooms of the house. It really looks like wood. I think a box costs around $125. It can be bought at Lowes, so no shipping costs would be involved. Maybe a Lowes delivery charge if you don’t have a car big enough to get it home. As always Sheryll… thanks for reading my blog. XO

  20. Judy Williams says:

The floors look fantastic!! Now days, many of the “faux” wood floors look much more realistic than real wood floors at a fraction of the cost. We got CoreTec LVP several years ago and love the easy upkeep and look. Your floors look like they have more dimension than mine. After we got ours, the LVP market exploded and more options were available. Your product seems great. Enjoy!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Judy – I agree the LVP market is exploding and for good reason…it is fabulous flooring that is so easy to take care of. We used another brand in my studioffice and a few other rooms that has a matte wood finish with a raised dimension. I like it, it looks more rustic. The ProGen looks more polished, like a finished wood floor. :-)

  21. Mackenzie says:

Looks great! We just went through this process in our living room, hallway, dining room, and kitchen. We used the LifeProof LVP flooring from Home Depot. I never realized how different the angles are in our house until this project. We’re also in Columbia. So far, I’m really liking the flooring. Stay cool in this heat!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Mackenzie – We have LVP in 5 rooms now. We love it. It looks good and is so easy to take care of. Ed is keeping track of the weather back home. After my daughter’w wedding in Virginia last weekend, we traveled up to Philadelphia to attend the wedding of our other daughter’s best friend. She is in the wedding. After this we are heading to relax for a few days in Stone Harbor, NJ. We plan to head back home next week. We saw on our weather apps that it is going to be hot. Hope you are staying cool. :-)

  22. Diane, that has to be the best vinyl flooring I have ever seen and I love the color!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Rosemary – It really really looks just like wood. I used to dislike going into the game room, now I love it and don’t want to leave. The flooring made a HUGE difference.

  23. Connie Meints says:

Hi Diane – The new flooring looks beautiful. I was wondering why you chose the Progen line rather than the NuCore product you previously used. Both look great – do you prefer one over the other? I’m thinking about replacing the carpet in my basement with LVP. Love your blog – look forward to seeing it in my inbox. Congratulations to your daughter & her new husband – can’t wait to see the wedding photos. Thank you for all the DIY tips:)

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Connie – I love both the NuCore and the ProGen. They are the same for installation and how durable they are. The difference is the NuCore is sold exclusively only at a few flooring stores, like Floor & Decor. None are in South Carolina. The other difference is that the ProGen has a smooth finish, like a polyurethaned wood floor. The NuCore has a more rustic look, it is matte and has the raised texture of wood. Both are great, just slightly different texture.

  24. Will this floor show indentations from heavy furniture like laminate floors do?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Dianne – Since the ProGen flooring has only be installed for about two weeks now, I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think indentations will show. The flooring is very durable. The vinyl planks have a rigid core and are quite hard on the surface. The selling features are that it holds up beautifully against water, temperature change and sunlight, resisting buckling, denting and warping. I have another brand of LVP in five other rooms in my house and there are no intentions marks from furniture in any of these rooms. I hope this helps answer your question.

      1. How is the Progen floor holding up today? Any indentations? Do you have any pads or protectors under your furniture?

        1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Anthony – I LOVE the Progen floor. It looks as good as the day we finished installing it. I highly recommend it, not only for durability, but the color and wood look – looks so real. Over the last few years we have installed another brand of LVP in a few rooms and also wood laminate. I like both of these, but if I had to choose one flooring for a new project or house, it would be the Tarkett.

  25. Diane, the floor looks great! I love the contrast with the beadboard walls. It will be so much easier to take care of instead of carpeting. Great job!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi MaryJean – Thanks – I am so happy to see the old carpet go. :-)

  26. Gail Vernali says:

What a change, it looks really great! So when are you doing the hall? So happy the wedding went so well, I’m Looking forward to seeing wedding photos!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Gail – I would love to do the hallway and two bedrooms upstairs. Hopefully soon, but time will tell. One of Kelly’s college roommates took the photos for the wedding. She is going to get them to us in the next few days. She also made a video, it came out great. It is up on Ed’s Facebook page. There is also a short one of Ed and Kelly doing there Daddy/Daughter dance on Ed’s FB too.

  27. Laura at Duke manor farm says:

Looks great Diane! Can’t wait to hear about the wedding. Congrats to your daughter and her groom. See you soon!!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Thanks Laura – I will post the photos and even a video of the wedding next week. This week I am taking a mini vacation and time off to re-coup after months and weeks of wedding prep and planning. :-) Looking forward to seeing you at Haven.

  28. Linda L Weeks says:

Wow this is the best looking flooring I’ve ever seen! I guess this is what I would want too, my carpet is ancient, and I’d love to replace it with this Progen line!

  29. Diane, the floors look great! We have been thinking about the luxury vinyl plank flooring for several rooms in our home here in Northeast Columbia, SC. I think you said previously that there are no places here in SC where you can go look at the luxury vinyl plank flooring. How can we decide about the right color of “wood” in order to pick out the proper one for our home if there is no showroom to inspect the product?
I love your blog! Thank you for your information about the installation, and any further information that you can give us about picking out the correct “color of wood” would be appreciated.

    1. The Tarkett ProGen is available at Lowes. The NuCore product she has used previously is not available at a store in South Carolina because it is “sold exclusively only at a few flooring stores, like Floor & Decor. None are in South Carolina.”

  30. The floors look awesome! This post is so timely since I am in the process of choosing & purchasing LVP flooring for my house, also. I have heard great things about it, I’m super excited! Thanks for all the great tips!
