Summer House Tour

Studioffice – Craft Room
I am going to start where I spend the most time – in my Studioffice. I gave it the name because I created it to be half office, half studio. In the house floor plan – it is what would have been the “formal living room”. I turned it into a creative space instead. It usually is not this tidy.

I found the desk on the curb! It was a freebie that I painted using super high gloss white. The ottoman I originally made for my bedroom, but it gets more use here. Studioffice Makeover
Everything in this room has been transformed in some way to fit my needs and style. I made a Rolodex out of paint chips for my desk, painted the furniture in all types of paint, and covered cardboard files with colorful gift wrap. Last summer, I created what I call the “creative wall”. It helps keep me organized and work much more efficiently. The first section is to organize gift wrap. When wrapping any gift, I just place it on the work table and pull down the paper I want.
The center section is where I organize my tools. It saves time when I know exactly where each tool is.
The last section of the wall turns into a mini photo studio. I mounted a roller shade along the top and simply pull it down when I need to take a photo. It is the perfect place since there is a window on the right.I place a white foam board to bounce the light on the left to get the best lighting I can.

I like white walls with lots of color pops.
To add some architectural interest, I created a fake transom using a $5.00 mirror and molding. I love how the mirror catches the light and makes the room brighter. How to Make a Fake Transom

Kitchen
I painted my kitchen cabinets about 12 years ago. The topiaries on either side of the sink were easy to make and 100% fake! I do not have a green thumb. I bought the rug at HomeGoods. How to Make Topiaries Using Fake Greenery
I bought the kitchen table about 15 years ago at JC Penney’s for $150. I recently stripped the dark top and left it unfinished. I am currently painting the black to white. There is always a can of paint opened around my house. How To Strip Wood Furniture
I used a M’Fay pattern to make the window treatment. I am not a seamstress and this was hard. Adding the beaded trim was a cinch after sewing the valance. How to Make a Beaded Valance
The most recent transformation I did, was stripping this cabinet and creating a faux Carrera marble top for the sideboard. The two pieces don’t match. I tried to make them into one perfect piece for the space. Caring For Unsealed or Salvaged Wood
When I painted the kitchen cabinets, I also added “wood feet” to the bottom corners of the cabinets. I used wood shelf brackets to make them. I also stenciled the floor. The floor is going to be refinished soon, so the stencil will be removed when the floor is sanded. DIY Kitchen Makeover
I like white. Most of these pieces are from the thrift store, the plates from HomeGoods, and the tureen and pitcher from an antiques fair. The basket on top, I painted by mixing paint, glaze, and water together, then brushed it on. I wiped it away after about 5 minutes. Furniture Stripping Basics
Family Room
I found this cute little table at the thrift store, it is the first piece I ever used chalk paint on.
I loved how it turned out and have been using DIY chalk paint on furniture ever since. I made different colored inserts for the table so that I can change things up from time to time. In the photo – I had mirrors cut to size and made it into One Table 4 Ways
Another hand-me down piece. I made it my own with chalk paint and glaze. The lampshades are from the Threshold line at Target.
The fireplace use to be brick. I used a product called AirStone to transform it. Some of the white slipcovers I made, others I bought. The corner cabinets used to be brown, I recently painted then white.
Foyer

The mirror is made by stacking one window sash on top of another. I replaced the glass with mirrors. The ornate molding on top I bought at a place in South Carolina that is no longer in business – WacamawPottery. I have never done a post about this since I made it long before I started to blog.

Dining Room

Mudroom

Master Bedroom
Long before I knew about the wonders of chalk paint, I used paint and glaze to create distressed effects to transform furniture.
Master Bathroom
This room is two stories high. I needed something large to fill the wall. I bought the biggest stretched canvas at the craft store and used crafts paints in my favorite colors to paint the squares.

I used these vintage swing rods in a Decorator’s Show house I was part of. When the show was over, I brought them home and made this simple white valance to hang from them. Guest Room

To update a hand-me down dresser, I used paint and gift wrap. To update the brass pulls, I used dollar store glass gems and scraps from the alphabet gift wrap on the top. Gift Wrap Top Dresser Makeover
It is always hard to decide on fabric when there are so many options to choose from. I could not choose just one, so I made the headboard cover reversible. One side had a black and white pattern, the other side is purple. How to Make a Reversible Padded Headboard Cover.
Since it was a guest room wall, I didn’t want to make a photo gallery. I gathered up all the framed mirrors I had and bought a few more at the dollar store to create this 3-D Gallery Wall. I used wood blocks to layer them. How to Make a 3-D Gallery Wall.
Hall Bath
This bathroom was shared by my daughters while they were growing up. It used to be purple. I added the board and batten and molding around the mirrors. $265 Bathroom Makeover
I made the wimpy window look larger by adding wood and molding to the top. The valance is made from Styrofoam insulation panels that I cut to size and covered with fabric.
I created a bead board front for the tub. The $10 floor update: black diamonds used to be green. I simply covered them with black vinyl that you would use in a Silhouette machine to create a classic black and white floor that would go with any color scheme.
Deck & Patio
Now that it is summer, you will find me outside. I have tried to set up the deck and patio as our getaway place – a place to take a Staycation when needed. Pink peonies and purple hydrangeas are swoon worthy. I wish they stayed in bloom all summer long.
The original cushions for these chairs were getting old and I noticed we always put a towel down before sitting on them. That gave me the idea to make terrycloth slipcovers for them. I had the monogram done on each at a local monogramming shop. How to Make Terrycloth Slipcovers
