Summer House Tour

If you are looking for colorful decor ideas for your home for summer, you will find many in this summer home tour in my previous home. If you would like to know more about each project, I included links to the posts and projects under each photo.

Studioffice – Craft Room

I am going to start where I spend the most time – in my Studioffice. I gave it the name because I created it to be half office, half studio.  In the house floor plan – it is what would have been the “formal living room”.  I turned it into a creative space instead.  It usually is not this tidy.

Everything in this room has been transformed in some way to fit my needs and style.  I made a Rolodex out of paint chips for my desk, painted the furniture in all types of paint, and covered cardboard files with colorful gift wrap.  Plain to Preppy DIY Chalk Painted Stool and these Colorful Magazine Files

Home-Craft-Room-and-Studio

Last summer, I created what I call the “creative wall”.  It helps keep me organized and work much more efficiently.  The first section is to organize gift wrap.   When wrapping any gift, I just place it on the work table and pull down the paper I want.

The center section is where I organize my tools.  It saves time when I know exactly where each tool is.

Bloggers-Mini-Photo-Studio

The last section of the wall turns into a mini photo studio. I mounted a roller shade along the top and simply pull it down when I need to take a photo.  It is the perfect place since there is a window on the right.I place a white foam board to bounce the light on the left to get the best lighting I can.

One of my recent furniture makeovers was an old library file that was handed down from my husband’s parents.  I spray painted my ugly office chair white and made a back slip for it using a striped throw rug.  Library File Makeover  and How to Makeover an Office Chair

I bought the kitchen table about 15 years ago at JC Penney’s for $150. I recently stripped the dark top and left it unfinished.   I am currently painting the black to white.  There is always a can of paint opened around my house.  How To Strip Wood Furniture

When I painted the kitchen cabinets, I also added “wood feet” to the bottom corners of the cabinets. I used wood shelf brackets to make them.   I also stenciled the floor. The floor is going to be refinished soon, so the stencil will be removed when the floor is sanded. DIY Kitchen Makeover

I found this cute little table at the thrift store, it is the first piece I ever used chalk paint on.

I loved how it turned out and have been using DIY chalk paint on furniture ever since. I made different colored inserts for the table so that I can change things up from time to time.  In the photo – I had mirrors cut to size and made it into One Table 4 Ways

Thanks so much. It has taken me some time to figure out what I really liked in the way of decor, but I can finally say I got it right for my style and family needs. Now all I need is a ocean or water view, then it would be perfect for me.

Your home is beautiful! I love the white. I’m not sure if I can pull it off with the kids…but I think I’m going to try! Question…how did you do the bathroom floor tile? Is there a link to that project? My bathroom is this horrible peach I would love to cover up and your’s looks amazing. Thanks for sharing :))

    1. Diane Henkler says:

      Hi Kristyn –

I used sticky adhesive backed black vinyl that is used when making vinyl cutouts for Silhouette machines. I bought it at the craft store, it comes in many colors. I am truly amazed at how durable it is. I did the floor 2 summers ago and it still looks like new. Every time I clean it, I smile and can’t believe how perfectly it has held up. Here is the link to the post I did about it. https://inmyownstyle.com/2011/08/how-i-transformed-a-vinyl-floor-for-10-00.html

  24. Hi Diane,
I love your amazing make-overs! I have two brown nightstands that I think would look good with some white. Have you ever just painted parts of furniture? I was thinking the tops and the fronts of the drawers. I’ve been looking on line, and I know I have seen some… but of course my search words are just leading me to furniture that was wood and is just painted white.
Thanks for any pics or words of wisdom!
    Rhonda

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Rhonda – Yes many times. I used to paint furniture for clients and had a portfolio of my work. It was a long time ago, before digital cameras. I have no idea what happened to it or I would show you some photos. I would go for it. Prepare the surfaces that you are going to paint – sand and prime then paint. If using chalk paint – just sand lightly. You will need painters tape to mask the areas you don’t want to paint. Depending on the look you are after, I would go over everything with poly or paste wax when done.

  25. Leena Lanteigne says:

Beautiful home tour, inside and out! Thank you so much for sharing!

  26. I am in awe of your craft room, I am speechless. Dianntha

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Thanks Dianntha – It was a long time in the making to get the room to the level (decor and organization)it is. It is by far my fave room in my house. If we move – my first criteria in a new house would be to make sure there is a space that I can set up like this to call my own.

  27. Krista @thehappyhousie says:

  29. It is wonderful and all the more impressive when you look at all at one time. Just beautiful.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Thanks so much Vickie. My studioffice is my favorite placed to hang out. I spend most of my time in there and have tried to arrange it so I can do everything I need to. The only thing it needs is a large space off of it to saw wood and spray paint stuff. Maybe someday :)

  31. Without a doubt, your blog is my favorite. You are so inventive and unique. I love that you tell us HOW and that you do things on a budget. Fantastic-looking house that is also a beautiful home!
