Have You Tried Soy Curls Yet?

This week’s WFPB food post is all about my “new-to-me” favorite food that even my husband likes. Have you ever had soy curls?

If you are trying to eat a vegan or whole, plant-based foods, you know that plant-based protein can be found in soy products like tofu and tempeh.

I am not a fan of either of these, which made me think I just didn’t like soy.

Well, I was wrong!!!

Since starting on my WFPB journey I have learned so much about all foods plant-based, how to cook them, where to buy, what is the best, etc.

I am always on the lookout for easy, uncomplicated recipes to try and recently came upon a recipe that used soy curls.

What? Soy Curls, I never heard of them. I am just a newbie to the soy curl revolution as they have been a thing for awhile.

Soy Curls can be used to make main dishes, soups, salads, bowls, wraps and more. They add a meaty flavor and texture to whatever you add them to.

Monkey and Me – Soy Curl Fajitas

I first came upon Butler Soy Curls on the WFPB blog, Monkey and Me Kitchen Adventures.

Both Ed and I loved this recipe and since the first time I made it, I have found and made a few recipes using them.

I am sharing the links in this post to each, so if you have not already tried soy curls in a recipe – you can now. I know you are going to like them.

So You May Be Asking – What Exactly Are Soy Curls?

First off they are not fake meat. They are a delicious and versatile plant-based alternative to meat or chicken depending on how you add flavor to them with your favorite seasonings from sauces, marinades, herbs and spices.

They also can be cooked in a number of ways – stove top, in the oven, air fryer or on the grill.

What Are Soy Curls Made Of?

Soy curls are made using only one ingredient – whole-non GMO soy beans that are grown and made in the USA.

They taste like chicken! They are not like TVP (textured vegetable protein), which is made by pressure-cooking and drying defatted soybean flour.

They are made from the whole bean and keep all their fiber and protein.

After doing some research, I also found out that they are processed without chemicals and packaged with no additives or preservatives.

How to Use Soy Curls?

They come dehydrated in a bag. To use them to whip up a delicious recipe, you soak them in water, broth or a seasoned liquid for 10-minutes. They will plump up and look like strands of chicken.

After soaking them, you squeeze out any excess liquid before cooking.

The bags should be stored in your fridge or freezer until ready to use.

Where Can You Buy Soy Curls?

It is hard to find Soy Curls at the grocery store, maybe someday when more people realize how good they are, they may start stocking them.

Butler Soy Curls™ is the only brand I have used.

Until they become more mainstream, I order them on Amazon. I buy a 3 pack at a time.

Hi MaryAnn – I know you will like them. My favorite way to eat them so far is so easy. You place them in water for 10 mins. Gently squeeze out the excess water and then mix them in BBQ sauce so they are nicely covered. Bake on 400 degrees in oven for about 20 mins or until they are just getting browned. I use them in wraps and sometime just right out of the oven. I use Primal Kitchen Classic Organic Unsweetened BBQ sauce (Health food store or https://amzn.to/2X9XRco I also like Bone Sucking Sauce – sold at most supermarkets.

      Enjoy!

  3. Your plant based diet is very interesting and I’ve learned some new things. But, I’m curious what you make if you have guests over for dinner or what kind of restaurant you go to with meat eaters? Does Ed ever eat meat? Thanks for all the great information.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi PJ – You are not the first person to ask me this. :-) Ed only eats the way I do 2 times a week. He eats meat. I batch cook my meals and make him the standard American diet. It is only the two of us, so this is not hard for me to do and he does all the grilling and meat prep. When we have family and guests – same thing. I use the family favorite recipes I have for years. I just don’t eat it. When we go out to dinner, I bring my own salad dressing and usually order a salad, veggies a baked potato and whatever else each restaurant serves that is WFPB.

  4. I love your recipe suggestions. Thank you for providing them. I am staying steady on the program but having some medical issues again so weight loss has slowed. Thank you so much for your constant support.

  5. Aren’t Soy Curls wonderful?! I’ve used them in bbq, spaghetti, stir fry, “chicken” salad, chili, tacos, and the list goes on. There is a soy curl Facebook page that has lots of recipes shared between people too. I found them at a huge market, on the other side of Atlanta from us, about an hour away. I buy about 8 bags each time. We love them🥰

Hi Pam – They are sooooo GOOD! I can’t believe I had never heard of them until recently. I am so happy to have found out about them as they really do give you the taste of meat when you want that for a meal. I will have to look up the Facebook group to find more recipes. :-)
