When I worked in retail display, my favorite part of the job was setting the tables for the seasons in the china department. I think this is where my love of table setting came from.
We had a wide array of china to chose from, but had to be resourceful with what we paired with it – from traditional items the store sold to freebie items from nature that we would go outside and find. Spray painted tree branches were a favorite.
With my display background, I try to come up with a different Christmas table setting each year using what I already own and adding a few crafty DIY’s to the mix.
This year, I chose to use – white, green, and blue. My dining room has turquoise accents that work well with the colors. My china is white which makes it easy to change what I do each year. I used blue and white bowls that were handed down from Ed’s family as the color accent along with green ribbons.
Christmas is not Christmas in my house without having the Kosta Boda Snowball votive holders in use. My brother gave me one as a Christmas present many years ago and I have been collecting them ever since.
I like that I can keep them up all winter long, not just for Christmas.
I am using the place card holders and letter tiles that I wrote about using for Thanksgiving. I think my sister and brother-in-law have perfect names for Christmas. :-)
I usually use a tablecloth, but since I refinished the table a few months ago in a driftwood finish, I didn’t want to cover it up.
I decided to make placemats using textured wallpaper that I bought at Lowes. It is sold right next to the bead board wallpaper.
It has an old-fashioned vintage feel to it that I like to see at Christmas. It reminds me of the perfect Christmases from my childhood.
I cut the wallpaper into 12 x 18 pieces and then set each place setting on the cut pieces.
For the table centerpiece, I used a preserved boxwood wreath that I found last year at an after-Christmas clearance sale. (It normally hangs on the door in my mudroom).
The candle holder is one of a pair that I bought at the thrift store and then transformed using DIY chalk paint.
Last year, I used sheet music with one of my favorite Christmas songs on it as placemats.
I used ornaments as place cards and made the centerpiece out of a log.
The year before I used paper snowflakes as placemats and burlap for the table cloth. I even glittered the stems of the wine glasses.
And the year before that, I used mirror tiles as a table runner, jingle bells to make place cards, and Dollar Store candle holders as the centerpiece.
We make a filet every year served along with Yorkshire Pudding, Mozzarella Orzo Bake and Roasted Brussels Sprouts. This year I want to make a Red Pepper soup. Pinot Noir usually fills our glasses. For dessert – ice cream and Christmas cookies.
